Russian designations are a little more descriptive in that specific letters and numbers denote specific features of a vehicle, as opposed to the US approach where most of the time it's just a matter of keeping things ordered sequentially. You may also sometimes see more descriptive terms, such as "Kampfpanzer" (a proper Tank) or "Schutzenpanzer" (generally taken as an Infantry Fighting Vehicle, although more literally covering any Armored Personnel Carrier) used as well, the latter being somewhat more common, and often abbreviated as "SPz". So you wind up with "Leopard 2A4", for example A Leopard tank model 2, version 4. Germany tends to go with a proper name ( Leopard, Puma, Fuchs, etc) with a model number (1, 2, 3.), followed by a version number (A, short for "Ausfuhrung") and a number (1, 2, 3.). For example, an M1A1 Abrams is "Tank, Combat, Full-Tracked, 120mm Gun, M1A1" As far as ground vehicles go, hyphens are not used, although beyond that the notation (in terms of spacing, punctuation) along with abbreviated terms can be a little all over the place.
